  • “They’re Going To Be Okay”: Trump On Chinese Students Amid Visa Crackdown

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed on Wednesday to “aggressively” revoke visas to students from China. Rubio has already yanked thousands of visas, largely over students’ involvement in activism critical of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, but also over minor traffic violations and other infractions.

The Trump administration has been in an ongoing showdown with academia, and Harvard in particular, demanding it provide a list of students that the government is interested in, something the prestigious university has declined to do.

“I don’t know why Harvard’s not giving us the list. There’s something going on because Harvard is not giving us a list,” Trump said Friday.

“They ought to give us a list and get themselves out of trouble,” he insisted, suggesting that “they don’t want to give the list because they have names on there that supposedly are quite bad.”

At graduation ceremonies this week, Harvard University president Alan Garber received a one-minute standing ovation when he called for universities to stand “firm” in the war the Trump administration has waged against students and schools.

“We want people that can love our country and take care of our country and cherish our country,” Trump said Friday.

International students on average make up just under six percent of the US university population — far below Britain, the second top destination for international students, where the figure is 25 percent.

  • How Trump Administration Targeting Chinese Students Was Years In The Making

“The president laid it out there in the campaign… when he says he’s going to do something in the campaign, he actually tries to do it,” said Ken Cuccinelli, who was Trump’s deputy of Homeland Security during his first term, per a report by the Politico.

“The reason people like me raised it in the first term is the reason you’re hearing from Rubio — there are very real security reasons to not help the Chinese advance their position in technical fields, and certainly not anyone more closely associated with [the Chinese Communist Party].”

The administration has China hawks who have been focussed on cracking down China’s influence on US institutions.

About 277,000 Chinese students studied in the US last year, and Marco Rubio, Secretary of State has vowed to “aggressively revoke” the visas and said that they will focus on people with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying sensitive subjects.

“The Secretary made this decision in the administration’s ongoing effort to protect our homeland from espionage and other hostile actions,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

China has condemned the policy and termed it “unreasonable”, one that “damaged the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and disrupted the normal cultural exchanges between the two countries.” The policy further complicated ties between the countries which are already battling strained ties since Trump put a 145 per cent tariff on Chinese goods but ultimately reduced it to 30 per cent after a temporary agreement with China. Similarly China also reduced the tariffs on the US from 125 percent to 10 per cent.

This week the US curbed critical US technology sales to China, including software that is used to make semiconductors.

The visa revocations for Chinese students comes as the initial step in removing Chinese influence from the United States. Trump allies hope the next target will be funding for universities working with Chinese grad students.

Moreover, US immigration law bars members of the Communist Party from becoming naturalised citizens or green card holders, however, these rules do not apply to people in the United States on student or tourist visas.

“Those who come to enjoy our country must love our country,” Trump said. “We’re going to keep foreign, Christian-hating communists, Marxists and socialists out of America.”

Legislation to limit Chinese nationals from obtaining visas for STEM-related studies had been introduced as early as 2020 by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) He applauded the administration’s decision in a statement, saying “China’s use of students to spy on political dissidents and American researchers is a well-documented national security threat.”

Rubio too had introduced a bill in 2021 targeting Chinese nationals in 2021. He pressured local colleges to shut down their Confucius Institutes when he represented Florida in the US Senate. He said in 2022, vocally opposing China, saying that it “is the most formidable near-peer adversary our nation has ever faced.”

  • Who Is Megha Vemuri? Indian-American Banned From MIT Event For Pro-Palestine Speech

MIT has banned student Megha Vemuri from its graduation ceremony.

Vemuri was scheduled to be the marshal but was disallowed by the chancellor.

The ban follows her pro-Palestine speech during a campus event.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has banned Indian-American student Megha Vemuri from her graduation commencement ceremony after she delivered a pro-Palestine speech during an event on Thursday (May 29). Ms Vemuri, MIT’s class of 2025 president, was scheduled to be the marshal at the ceremony, but university chancellor, Melissa Nobles, announced she could not attend the event.

Ms Noble also stated that Ms Vemuri and her family were banned from the college campus for most of the day.

“You deliberately and repeatedly misled Commencement organizers,” Ms Nobles wrote in an email to Ms Vemuri, as per the Boston Globe.

“While we acknowledge your right to free expression, your decision to lead a protest from the stage, disrupting an important institute ceremony, was a violation of MIT’s time, place and manner rules for campus expression.”

  • PM Modi Inaugurates Indore Metro Rail Project, Satna And Datia Airports

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated three significant transportation projects; including the Indore Metro Rail, along with the Satna and Datia airport projects, during his visit to Bhopal.

PM Modi participated in the celebrations commemorating the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the distinguished ruler of Malwa.

The Indore Metro Rail project, the first of its kind in Madhya Pradesh, marks a transformative step in urban transportation.

The Datia airport, for which the foundation stone was laid in 2012 with an initial investment of Rs 21.18 crore, was completed in 2015. It was upgraded into a full-fledged airport in 2023 and became ready for operations by 2024.

The metro network spans 31.3 kilometres, with an initial six-kilometre stretch inaugurated by PM Modi on Saturday.

The first phase includes five stations at Gandhinagar and various points along the Super Corridor. The metro’s rolling stock features stainless steel coaches designed with a white and yellow aesthetic, ensuring rust resistance and durability.

  • Chandrababu Naidu On Key Difference Between BJP, Opposition Leadership

The key difference between the BJP today and the opposition is leadership, said veteran politician and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu.

“The BJP has an inspiring leadership. PM Modi is selecting leadership on the basis of effectiveness. He is even selecting young leaders on the basis of performance. That makes all the difference,” Mr Naidu told NDTV, his first time on national television since he supported the Narendra Modi 3.0 government.

Mr Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was among the key allies whose support helped the BJP form the government after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. TDP won 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh and also won the simultaneous assembly election in the southern state, which catapulted him to the position of Chief Minister for a fourth term.

“The BJP leadership has dynamism,” the Chief Minister added.

Avoiding any direct criticism of his political rivals, Mr Naidu, when probed on the leadership of the opposition, said, “Electoral wins are proof,” obliquely hinting at the poor track record of the opposition in fighting and winning elections against the BJP.

He even hinted that times change, and even parties and politics have to change with the times. “At one point, communists were very powerful, but today, what is the scope for communists after the economic reforms?”
